Prof Dr Upendra Devkota was born in a remote village of Gorkha, and completed schooling there, standing among the top few in the National Board Exam. He secured Government scholarship to study science in Kathmandu; and a meritorious scholarship again to study medicine in India, which he completed in 1977.

Upon return, he worked at Bir Hospital till he was selected to train in Neurosurgery in Britain through the British Council’s Technical Cooperation Scheme.

He trained in Glasgow, Oxford and London at the premier British Neurosurgical Institutes for six years obtaining fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow.

On returning to Nepal he started neurosurgical practice at Bir Hospital, and developed it to the international standards and organised postgraduate training there.

He was Appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Science and Technology in 2002 during which, he initiated Community Health Insurance, the National Academy of Medical Sciences, secured membership for Nepal in to the International Atomic Energy Agency, and formulated the National Policy on Science and Technology.

He later founded the National Institute of Neurological and Allied Sciences, Bansbari, spearheading research, and training of human resources.
His contribution has been recognised nationally and internationally with award of GorkhaDakshinBahu, BikhyatTrishaktiPatta, RashtriyaGauravYuvaSamman, President-ship of South Asian Association of Neurosurgeons, Honorary Membership of Society of British Neurosurgeons, Fellow ad-hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Sir Wylie McKissock Medal of St. Georges, University of London.
