John C. Tyler and Thomas E. Leavey knew from personal experience that farmers and ranchers experienced fewer risks with their vehicles and were entitled to preferred rates. Tyler and Leavey put up their own money and went farm to farm to gain their first policies. By 1928, they were ready to open for business out of a one-room office in downtown Los Angeles.
Today, Farmers serves more than 10 million households with more than 20 million individual policies across all 50 states through the efforts of over 50,000 exclusive and independent agents and nearly 24,000 employees.
Farmers Insurance and its subsidiaries claimed 5.09 percent of the private passenger auto insurance market as of June 2015, the most recent data available from data analyst A.M. Best. That makes Farmers the sixth-largest auto insurance carrier among the more than 1,400 tracked by Best.
What would make Farmers customers switch?
